*~*~*~*

A small whisper of breath burst across Calis’s tongue as his lips came into contact with Rhoswyn’s. Her hands wrapped around his shoulders and she clung to him while she gasped for air. He helped her sit up and slipped his arms around her waist, holding her weak body close to him.

As her shuddering gasps subsided into more steady breathing, he brushed a black lock of hair from her cheek. "Are you all right?" His forehead crinkled in concern as he looked her over. She was paler than normal, but seemed to be otherwise okay.

She paused for a moment before nodding in confirmation. "Yes, I think so." Her delicate fingers found her throat and trailed across the skin there. "The apple, where did you get it?"

Calis’s face fell. "Athan’s mother."

They both sat in silence, thinking of the old woman who held the fearful respect of so many.

"Don’t take me back there." Rhoswyn’s voice was soft and shaky when she spoke. As she looked up at Calis, fat tears broke over her dark lashes and streamed down her cheeks. "Please, Calis."

He gripped her tighter and held her close. "If I don’t, I’ll be bound to the castle forever." He pressed his lips to her temple.

"You can’t be bound if you’re not already inside."

He was silent and she waited for his response. "Okay," he whispered. His chest hurt as he made the decision. "We’ll slip into the South. We should be safe there."

"We’ll head to the castle. Titania and Mab are not on good terms right now. She’ll grant us mercy."

As they packed up their things, Calis grinned bravely on the outside. Inside, his stomach was in knots.
